Revalidation

2012 is the start of GMC Revalidation

It is essential that locum doctors have a yearly appraisal to prepare for revalidation.

What you need to know
As you are aware the General Medical Council and the NHS are preparing for the revalidation of doctors. Revalidation via a system of appraisals, quality assurance and governance is essential to the desired aims of these organisations. All designated bodies should have a Responsible Officer (RO); a designated body as far as locum agencies are concerned are those which are participants in the NHS Purchasing and Supply Agency's national framework agreement (GPS) for the supply of medical locums.

Know Your Responsible Officer
NISI Staffing is a designated body and has a Responsible Officer in place. The RO duties include, though are not limited to:
•Notification and communication with the GMC
•Arranging appraisals
•Monitoring performance
•Investigating any reported concerns
•Recommending a doctor to the GMC for revalidation
You should make sure that you know who your RO is. If you work for an NHS organisation permanently, the Responsible Officer or the Medical Director within that organisation will be your RO.

Preparing for Revalidation
If you are registered with a locum agency then their designated agency Responsible Officer can be your RO. As a locum you should be preparing for your appraisal and should create a portfolio containing the following:
•A list of posts undertaken, including exact dates
•Feedback documents such as assessment forms, letters from patients, colleagues and any 360° appraisals
•Exit reports and references
•Incident reports and complaints
•CME activities i.e. courses, conferences, meetings, training and departmental meetings
•Online training, including details
•Log book and verified record of clinical activities

It is your responsibility to ensure that you are fully committed to this process. If you require any further information, the RST website has supporting information or you can email any questions to
